What is the best way to teach myself how to Play Guitar?
I have had a guitar for about two years but have no idea how to play it. I have tried taking out book from the library to help me but I still don’t know how to play it. How can I teach myself to play a guitar?
There are a lot of online tutorials for help at all levels.
First learn how to hold the guitar and position your hands.
Nest, spend a week doing a boring exercise where you use every finger on your left hand except the thumb to play a chromatic scale. Play for 5 minutes at a time a few times a day. This will condition your fingers. Start with your pointer finger on the 5th fret position of the 6th string. (This is the position between the 5th and 6th fret on the fattest string that makes the lowest sounding note.) With your right hand use a pic and play the note. Work on this 1 note until it sounds reasonable. Next use your left hand middle finger 1 fret up on the 6th fret. The the ring finger on the 7th. Then the pinky on the 8th. Now move the the next string, but start on the 4th fret and repeat the pattern. (When you get to the second string, you will not need to go down a fret to start the pattern like the other strings.)
One more thing about the above exercise. On the fisrt note, strike the pic downward. On the second note use an upward stroke. Keep alternating up-down with each note played.
After a week of doing this, learn 3 chords that you can use in a 12 bar blues song. (Or have a friend teach you an easy 3 chord song.) One of my first songs was Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival. That song uses a D, A, and G chord. You can look up how to play these on any internet search. (A bandmate has a chord app on his IPhone.)
Get the words to the song and try to sing along as you play. Even if you never become the lead singer in a band, the act of singing while you play will help you become better at both.
After you learn a couple 3 chord songs I recommend learning the A minor pentatonic scale. Sounds fancy, but it is really quite simple.
Once you get proficient at these 3 things, you’ll probably figure out better ways for your own learning.
